Scouts from eight countries participated in the jamboree, which was co-organised by the Johor government and the Johor Scout Federation.
The objective was to foster solidarity and co-operation between scouts in Malaysia and other countries.
“The response was overwhelming as we had only expected about 2,000 scouts to take part. All together, 3,605 scouts came for the six-day jamboree, including 217 from Indonesia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and the Maldives,” said Johor Scouts Commissioner Yaacob Abdul Karim.
“This was the first time that we gave attention to the international scouts in the jamboree as previously we concentrated on scouts from Malaysian states because if we had sent scouts overseas to meet their counterparts, it would have been very expensive.”
Yaacob said the recent international jamboree was a good experience for the scouts.
“By bringing scouts from other countries to Malaysia, the scouts could share their experiences with one another and learn from each other,” said Yaacob, who has been the Johor Scouts Commissioner since 2005.
The scouts also got a taste of local culture.
Some of the scouts, mostly those from overseas, were very excited to take part in a kuda kepang performance while others took the opportunity to try out Chinese drums.
The scouts were also given the opportunity to learn about amateur radio broadcasting and to showcase their talent in a band.
The jamboree was opened by the Tunku Mahkota of Johor Tunku Ibrahim Ismail. Also present was the Chief Scout of Malaysia Datuk Seri Dr Shafie Mohd Salleh, who also attended the final night of the jamboree.
The next jamboree will be held in 2010, which will coincide with Visit Johor Year.
“Hopefully, we will be able to incorporate elements of tourism into our next jamboree. I also hope it will attract more participants,” said Yaacob.
