IRRESPONSIBLE people with a litter habit have caused the blockage of a drain at the wet market in Jalan Patani in George Town recently.

A reader claimed that the drain, located by the car park of the market, was filled with plastic bags containing food leftovers and other rubbish.

He said the clogged drain could cause water to overflow during a downpour, apart from being unhygienic.

Penang Island City Council councillor Ong Ah Teong said he had instructed its workers to clean up the drain.

“People should make use of the rubbish bin at the site. We will continue to clean the drain, but we also need the public’s cooperation to keep the area clean,” he said.
