BUTTERWORTH: A structure below a flyover near the Penang Sentral here has become a shelter of sorts for “homeless” people.

Photos of people sleeping on the structure went viral on social media recently, triggering calls for the authorities to help them.

Netizens, concerned about the welfare of these people, have called on state officials to look into the matter and provide necessary assistance.

It was found that some
of them were scavengers while others were doing odd jobs.

Residents claimed that these people were struggling to earn a living as can be seen from their clothing and the worn-out pillows.

They claimed that some had been wearing the same outfit for quite some time.

“They have been here for some time, but never caused any trouble.

“I hope the authorities can provide them with proper shelter, clothing and jobs,” a motorist told Actionline on condition of anonymity.

ACTIONLINE:

State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said his office would investigate and take action.

“Some might be construction workers, but we will check and provide assistance.”
