THE modest movement has been gaining steam for a few years now and the hijab has become a recognised fashion symbol. In 2014, DKNY launched a bespoke modest fashion collection. Last year, Dolce & Gabbana released a line of luxury hijab and abaya.
In the same year, H&M featured a Muslim model wearing a hijab in a video to promote its sustainable fashion line. Halima Aden was the first beauty pageant contestant in history to wear a hijab at the Miss Minnesota USA competition.
Aden was invited to Milan to walk the Max Mara and Alberta Feretti catwalk in her hijab, having also been cast by Kanye West for his Yeezy show in New York a few weeks earlier.
Labels such as DKNY, Oscar de la Renta, Tommy Hilfiger, Mango and Monique Lhuillier have produced one-off collections featuring flowing gowns and wide-leg trousers to coincide with the celebrations of Aidilfitri and Ramadan.
And it’s not just high-end labels. Nike announced the launch of its first Hijab Pro sportswear headscarf. Uniqlo teamed up with Brit-Japanese fashion designer Hana Tajima to launch their hijab-friendly collection.
Muslim fashion is undoubtedly one of the biggest trends to come, not as a replacement but as an addition to current ranges and fashion events.
ENHANCING MODEST FASHION
A few months ago I got a call from a dear friend in Singapore. She invited me to join Singapore Modest Fashion two weeks ago. The star studded three-day event was predicted to be the largest fashion gathering of designers from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
Besides holding my Styling Workshop, my job was to ensure that every collection came out of the runway beautifully; to actually curate and help these emerging designers to showcase their collection is somehow inspiring both ways.
Most of them need some guidance to path their way into fashion and some are still clueless about branding their label on a larger scale. And it was a great opportunity for them to have me to come down and polish every look down the runway to perfection.
Looking at Fiziwoo, Syomir Izwa Gupta and Sazzy Falak’s shows — these designers have certainly raised the bar of modest wear in terms of new shape and modest styling. I couldn't help but wonder, what is the essential rule in dressing stylishly for modest wear? Here’s a low down on my favourite new shapes for modest wear.
I’m sure this new cut abaya will be a hit among fashionable women in hijab, given how this simple cut can be manipulated into different themes — gala night, wedding and even award show by just different styling and use of fabrics.
Layer it with-heavily embellished sleeves or lace for dressy nights, or you can keep it simple with just a white shirt underneath.
THE V-NECK PONCHO
How cool is this two-piece combination? When Fiziwoo pair it with a slim flair pants, it just elevates the whole look to chic perfection. Moreover, style it with exaggerated-sleeved shirt or turtle neck and turban, this polished cut will definitely go a long way.
THE RUFFLES SHIRT
I started to layer every single fashion piece with white shirt two years ago. Back then, I think every look is flawless and sharp. But after a year of doing so, I got bored and switched to turtleneck as commenced by Celine.

When Blancheur redid the maxi skirt and presented us with this beautiful cut of asymmetrical tiered, I was overwhelmed. The hemline that ends perfectly on the ankle, gives a light silhouette a whole new look. Made with light but structured fabric, it’s the perfect skirt to show off your colorful heels.
THE 1970S JUMPSUIT
The master of print play, Syomir Izwa Gupta always knows how to push the boundaries when it comes to modest wear style. When you do modest, and can mix colours and prints well, you get a successful outfit. This suave sky blue jumpsuit just perfectly represents the flamboyant modest girl who loves to play with colours without going overboard.
After years in the fashion wilderness, suddenly Muslims seem almost spoilt for choice. What’s the reason for this major change? According to a recent report from Thomson Reuters and Dinar Standard globally, Muslims spent £185 billion (RM1,041 billion) on clothing and footwear in 2013.
That tops the total fashion spend of Japan and Italy combined. In the UK alone, the State of the Global Islamic Economy 2013 report estimated the Muslim fashion market to be worth £100 million and is expected to double by next year. With such major spending power, it’s no wonder the fashion industry is starting to take us seriously. They better!
