Celebrated Persian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi churns out a thought-provoking film with The Salesman

GSC International Screens presents another entertaining and thought-provoking film with The Salesman.

This 2016 Iranian drama is the latest from celebrated Persian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, whose works frequently tackle social and class issues.

His previous film, A Separation (2011), won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2012.

The film, which chronicled the effects a girl experiences after her parents separate, became the first Iranian feature to win the prestigious award.

As with A Separation, The Salesman is also directed, written and produced by Farhadi. It stars Taraneh Alidoosti and Shahab Hosseini, who play a married couple.

They are theatre actors in the midst of performing a run of famed American playwright Arthur Miller's tragic play, Death Of A Salesman.

The wife, Rana, goes missing one day and returns later revealing that she has been assaulted by an unknown man. Her husband, Emad, then takes it upon himself to look for and uncover the identity of the attacker.

As Rana struggles to cope with her post-traumatic stress, Emad gets closer to the truth and will have to make a decision on what to do with the perpetrator once he captures him.

The Salesman premiered in competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. It won two awards: Best Screenplay for Farhadi and Best Actor for Hosseini.

The film then went on to receive critical acclaim worldwide, culminating in an Academy Award win for Best Foreign Language Film.

Farhadi chose Miller's play as his story within a story based on shared themes. The 125-minute film, which was shot in Tehran in 2015, features dialogue in Farsi with English subtitles.
