KUALA LUMPUR: Ashleigh Barty won her first WTA Tour title in the Malaysian Open at TPC Kuala Lumpur today.

The 158th-ranked Australian defeated Japan’s Nao Hibino 6-3, 6-2 in a rain-delayed final.

She is the first qualifier to win the tournament since Taiwan’s Hsieh Su Wei in 2012 and also the second Australian to do so after Jelena Dokic in 2011.

“I am delighted to win my first tour title. I played amazing tennis all week and I hope the win will inspire me in upcoming tournaments,” said Ashleigh today.

Ashleigh earned US$43,000 (RM191,544) and 280 ranking points for her efforts, while Nao received RM21,440 (RM95,325) and 180 ranking points.

The Prime Minister’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, presented the trophies to Ashleigh and Nao.
