KUALA LUMPUR: The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Co, an American multinational tyre manufacturing company, revealed two futuristic concept tyres during the 87th Geneva International Motor Show.
Goodyear showcased the spherical-shaped Eagle 360 Urban and the IntelliGrip Urban smart tyre, which uses technologies such as artificial intelligence and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) connectivity to help autonomous driving.
“A revolution will take place at the intersection of autonomy, mobility and connectivity. As this unfolds, tyre technology will be even more important than it is today.
“To safely navigate their surroundings, the autonomous vehicles of the future will need to learn to cope with the millions of possible unknowns we face in every day driving scenarios. To do so, they will need access to data and the ability to learn and adapt,” said the president of Goodyear Europe, Middle East and Africa Jean-Claude Kihn in a statement.
The Eagle 360 Urban is an evolution of the spherical-shaped design concept the company debuted at last year’s Geneva show.
Eagle 360 Urban is a spherical “bionic skin” tyre, which would rely on a magnetic levitation system to connect the tyre with the vehicle. It could be integrated into the vehicle’s “nervous system” by giving the concept an artificial intelligence “brain” that would allow it to sense, decide, transform and interact.
It also has other key features which include a V2X communications connectivity to gather and share real-time information of the driving conditions from the tyres, other vehicles, infrastructure and traffic systems for a complete picture.
The bionic skin which is made of a super-elastic polymer with built-in sensors would features the flexibility to adapt its tread pattern to driving conditions, and the tyre’s bionic skin can also heal itself if damaged using molecular bonding technology. Sensors in the tread are able to locate the puncture, and the tyre reacts by rotating to reduce the pressure and to allow the self-healing process to begin.
The other concept, which is the the IntelliGrip Urban smart tyre is something that is closer to reality.
It is a tall and narrow tyre features sensor-in-tyre technology, to gather and share information of the road and weather conditions with the vehicle control system to optimise speed, braking, handling and stability. It has an active maintenance through telematics, as well as a tyre health monitoring system to allow fleet operators to identify and resolve tyre-related issues safely before it happens.
“The IntelliGrip Urban concept with reduced rolling resistance for extending the range of electric vehicles, is designed for autonomous, on-demand transportation, with a focus on maximising up-time and reducing operating cost for the ride-sharing service providers,” said Goodyear.
