PETALING JAYA: A couple broke down in the dock after they were sentenced to 12 months’ jail for concealing the birth of their baby by trying to dispose of its body last year.

Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir handed down the sentence against Faizal Said, 20, and Nur Fitri Iryani Sani, 19, after they pleaded guilty to their offence today.

The couple, both private college students, were charged with concealing the birth of their newborn baby girl by attempting to bury her body at a house in Kelana Sentral, Jalan SS 6/12, Kelana Jaya at 10pm on Aug 23.

The duo, who were jointly charged, appeared calmed when the charge was read out to them. However, they could not hold back their tears after the magistrate meted out the sentence.

Several people, believed to be Faizal’s family members, hugged him before he was taken to the court’s lockup after the proceeding.

They were charged under Section 318 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum two years’ jail, fine, or both.

Earlier, the duo, who were unrepresented, pleaded for a lenient sentence, saying they came from poor families and wanted to complete their studies.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Fazeedah Faik pressed for a deterrent sentence to the accused.

According to the facts of the case, Fitri Iryani suffered of stomach ache before she gave birth to the baby in a toilet.

She informed Faizal of the incident and told him that the baby was dead upon delivery.

Faizal took the body and sought help at the nearby mosque for a proper burial. However, an unidentified man informed him that he needed to lodge a police report.
