JOHOR BARU: The magistrate’s court here today sentenced a Pakistani man to a fine of RM4,000 for sexually harassing a 23-year-old woman on a bus last Thursday.
Magistrate Siti Hajar Ali sentenced plumber Haris Mohamad Moin, 25, after the foreigner pleaded guilty to the charge.
He will be sentenced to four months’ jail if he fails to pay the fine.
Haris was accused of criminal violence with the intention of violating the honour of the local woman on an express bus in front of a shopping centre in Tampoi.
According to the facts of the case, the accused was standing in an express bus when he poked the victim’s waist, before grabbing her hand, at about 7am on Feb 8.
He was charged under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine, a whipping – or two of the three penalties.
Haris appealed for a lighter sentence, as he supports his four younger brothers in Pakistan on a monthly income of just RM930.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Jalil Salam Mohamad, while the accused was represented by lawyers Nur Zafirah Norizan and Siti Nadia Yahya.
