ALOR STAR: Police have obtained a four-day remand order for a lorry driver who was involved in a 15 vehicle pile-up at Simpang Kuala traffic light on Tuesday.
Kota Setar district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Mohd Rozi Jidin said the 39-year-old man from Kuala Nerang was remanded from today until May 19.
He said in the 4pm incident, six people sustained minor injuries after the lorry rammed the vehicles which stopped at the red light.
All the victims received treatment at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital before they were allowed to return home.
Mohd Rozi said the injured victims were identified as Marliana Omar, 26, Mat Ani Bahari, 65, Robia’ah Talib, 61, Mohamad Shafiq Mohammad, 24, Lim Pei Pang, 32, and Ooi Kim Heok, 72.
He said during the incident, all the vehicles were travelling from Alor Mengkudu towards the traffic light junction and were waiting in two lanes at the red light.
However, the lorry which had just came down from an overhead bridge failed to brake and rammed into the back of the vehicles which were queuing up on both lanes.
“The lorry driver was not injured. We have taken the lorry to Puspakom for inspection. The driver was not under the influence of drug or alcohol,” he said.
Mohd Rozi said police are seeking the cooperation from the public who had witnessed the incident to help assist their investigation.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
