BAGAN DATUK: A man, believed to be mentally unstable, killed three siblings and wounded their mother and three other people at Kampung Sungai Haji Muhammad in Rungkup here today.
Perak police Criminal Investigation Department chief senior assistant commissioner Yahya Abd Rahman said the 37-year-old man ran towards the home of the three children, aged between 2 and 5, at 2pm and killed them with a parang.
“The man slashed them to death while their mother suffered serious injuries,” he said.
“Within half an hour, the man ran to SK Sungai Haji Mohamad and slashed two pupils and a member of the public,” adding that police had yet to establish the motive of the attack.
He said police have arrested the man and seized the parang near the school.
The victims were sent to the Teluk Intan Hospital.
Yahya said the case was being investigated under Section 302 for murder.
He said initial checks showed the man did not have any prior record of mental illness. Police are now checking if he was under the influence of drug during the attack.
A villager, who did not want to be named, said the attacker stayed near the siblings’ home.
“Since two, three days ago he appeared unwell but we did not expect him to do this on the first day of Ramadan,” he said.
A relative, Salbiah Idris, 72, said the deceased were identified as Nur Ziah Fasihah Mohd Fadzil, 2, Muhammad Firash Zaffril, 3 and Mohammad Faqhqih Zahirulhaq, 5.
The injured were the victims' mother, Zuraidah Md Ali, 35, and their elder sister Nur Zuryn Faziera, 9.
Salbiah said during the incident, she was afraid to get out of her house, which was nearby, and only managed to yell at the man to calm down.
"He warned me not to get involved and threatened to slash me if I tried to intervene." she said.
After he had slashed the family members, she said the man ran towards SK Sungai Haji Muhamad where he slashed Nur Zuryn, her schoolmate and a teacher.
The man was arrested after police arrived at the scene.
