IPOH: A 2-year-old boy endured almost 24 hours of pain on Tuesday after being bitten by a cobra while he was fast asleep.

In the 7.15am incident, Muhammad Izz Fayat Sumardi was bitten by the venomous 0.9 metre snake while sleeping with his mother on the floor of a room at their home in Bandar Baru Putra here.

Izz’s father, Sumardi Chek Had, 39, said he was about to doze off after returning home from work when he heard his youngest child crying.

“He was screaming and crying. When my wife checked his left palm, she saw traces of blood and snake bite marks.

“Panicked, I rushed him to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital. Izz was crying relentlessly and he was becoming weak as his left hand started turning blue.

Sumardi said Izz’s pain was very obvious over the next 24 hours at the hospital, despite receiving treatment, as he would cry every time he was awake.

“I know he was and still is in pain, but ‘Alhamdulillah’, this morning, he could smile and only his left hand is still swollen, up to his elbow.

“The doctor also informed me that his lungs and kidneys are okay,” he added.

Sumardi said that he also contacted the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, asking them to catch the snake which was hiding under the bed when they left for the hospital.

He added that his neighbours had previously sighted the cobra lurking in their housing area. -- Bernama
