KUANTAN: Heavy downpour since early this morning has exacerbated flooding in Pahang, leading to an increase in the number of flood evacuees to 738 victims.
The victims, from 188 families, were sheltered at 10 flood relief centres as at 5pm. The figure was 697 victims ( from 177 families) at 2pm.
State Civil Defence Force director Colonel Zainal Yusoff said the number of evacuees in Pekan continued to rise to 613 people at eight relief centres.
He said that 249 victims were sheltered at SK Sinar Mutiara, Sungai Miang; SK Temai (93 people); SMK Peramu Jaya (89 people); and Pulau Manis flood shelter (75 people).
"Other relief centres are Tanjung Pulai Multipurpose Hall (39 people); Kampung Lamir relief centre (38 people); SK Acheh (nine people); and SK Seri Terentang (11 people)," he said today.
With regards to Rompin, Zainal said that 125 victims from 34 families were placed at two relief centres since yesterday.
"The two flood shelters are SK Tekek with 63 people and Leban Chondong Public Hall (62 people)," he said.
He said that based on information from the Public Works Department (PWD), three roads in the state were closed off to light vehicles after they were inundated.
"The three roads are Jalan Serengkam-Bak Bak at Kampung Orang Asli Merbau and Simpang Belimbing, Maran; Jalan Lubuk Batu near a wooden bridge at Kampung Lubuk Batu, Rompin; and Jalan Tekek-Lalang in Tioman (Island)," he said.
