RANAU: Firefighters retrieved the charred remains of a lorry driver who was trapped underneath a 10-tonne vehicle which plunged into a ravine at Jalan Ranau-Telupid, near Kampung Nabutan here this morning.
The driver, whose identity was unknown, was earlier reported missing from the lorry when firefighters arrived at the scene to put out the blaze.
In the 6.40am incident, the victim was believed to have lost control of the vehicle, which plunged into a 91-metre-deep ravine and caught fire.
The lorry was carrying oil palm fruits.
It was believed the driver could have been thrown out during the incident and was buried underneath the heavy vehicle.
Firefighters conducted a search operation for the missing driver in the surrounding area. The team later found the body while clearing the area to remove the lorry from the site.
The body was handed over to the police for further action.
The district fire and rescue department received a distress call at 6.43am and a team of six firefighters was deployed to the scene. The operation ended at 1pm.
