KULIM: When he was flooded by text messages in WhatsApp application from friends asking about his condition, Ishak Saari, 34, had no clue what was going on.

When he started receiving pictures of his mangled Proton Satria which was involved in an accident, Ishak decided to rush to Kulim Hospital to check on his family members who were travelling in the car.

His worst fear was confirmed upon seeing the lifeless bodies of his sister Hasimah, 32, her husband Azli Adzali,46, and the couple's 16-month-old daughter Nuranis Umairah at the hospital's Forensic Department.

His father, Saari Man, 71, who was also in the car, survived but suffered serious injuries in the noon accident when the car the family was in was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction at Kampung Terap Batu 12 in Serdang.

According to Ishak, Azli had gone to his house about 9am today to borrow his car to attend a funeral of a relative in Seberang Perai, Penang.

"As I was rushing we did not talk much when I passed the car keys to him. He took the car and drove back to my parents home in Keda Sungai Salleh, Serdang, to fetch his family and my father before leaving for Seberang Perai," he said when met at Kulim Hospital.

Ishak said Azli worked as a lorry driver while Hasimah was a homemaker and the couple lived with his parents in Keda Sungai Salleh.

He was informed that the incident occurred when the family was returning home from Seberang Perai.

"I cannot believe that I have lost my sister, brother-in-law and their daughter at the same time. Their bodies will be laid to rest at Keda Sungai Salleh Muslim Cemetery this evening," he said.

"The bodies were handed over to the police while the injured victim was rushed to Kulim Hospital," Kedah Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mustakim Mokhtar said. (STR/AZAHAR HASHIM)

Meanwhile, a resident in Kampung Terap Batu 12, Mazli Ahmad, 40, said he was resting at home located just 30 metres from the scene of the accident when he heard a loud crash followed by screeching sounds.

"I dashed out and had a shock upon seeing a car by the roadside near my home while a lorry had crashed into a drain on the opposite side of the road.

"Several motorists pulled over to help the victims and contacted the ambulance. When I reached the scene all four people in the car appeared unconscious.

"The other motorists tried to pull out the driver and his passenger sitting on the front seat but could not as they were pinned to the seats. So we decided to seek help from the Fire and Rescue Department," he said.

Mazli said it was heartbreaking upon learning that three people including a baby in the car had died at the scene," he said.

Kedah Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mustakim Mokhtar in a statement said the Serdang Fire Station received a distress call at 12.18pm and nine rescuers were dispatched to the scene.

"The driver and two passengers seated on the rear seat were already dead while the passenger on the front seat was seriously injured.

"The bodies were handed over to the police while the injured victim was rushed to Kulim Hospital," he said.

Kulim police chief Superintendent Ahmad Nasir said initial investigation showed that the driver of the Proton Satria had lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the lorry which was travelling in the opposite direction from Serdang towards Kulim.

He said three of the victims were killed on the spot, one passenger survived with serious injuries and was rushed to Kulim Hospital while the lory driver escaped unhurt.
