KOTA BARU: The Forestry Department has lodged a police report against state opposition leader Husam Musa over his allegations that the Forestry Sub-committee meeting had approved new logging projects recently.

State Forestry director Datuk Zahari Ibrahim said no such approval had been given and stressed that the Salor assemblyman’s allegations were “completely baseless”.

“We lodged the report at the state police headquarters under the Anti-Fake News Act 2018. We lodged it because we view his allegations as fake news. The sub-committee meeting never discussed the approval of any logging project,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, Husam had sent a notice of objection to Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob over what he claimed was the approval of new logging projects made by the sub-committee.

Husam claimed that approval of such projects could not be done following the dissolution of the state legislative assembly.

“As this state government is merely a caretaker government, it cannot approve such an important matter as new logging projects. The act of calling a meeting of the sub-committee to approve projects which involves a large area of forest reserve is not right and goes against the (state) constitution.

“We will also look to get a court order if it is true that such an approval had been given,” he had said.
