KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak today expressed regret over how his sincere visit to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in hospital had been misconstrued.
Najib said he recently visited Anwar in hospital due to his friendship with the PKR de facto leader, but his visit was mocked with a ‘pantun’ by Anwar via the latter’s social media account.
"I visited him in hospital as he was sick. I went because we were old friends. I even brought my wife (Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor) along.
“But our sincerity was insulted and greeted with a pantun. This is my reply, saudara Anwar, so listen.
"Burung Merpati Terbang Sekawan,
Hinggap Seekor Di Atas Dahan,
Kita Sahut ‘Lawan Tetap Lawan’,
Di Pilihanraya Bertarunglah Seperti Anak Jantan," said Najib.
Najib’s remarks drew roars of approval from the delegates at the Umno General Assembly.
Following Najib’s visit to Anwar, who was hospitalised following a shoulder operation, the Opposition leader posted a pantun via social media, which described how despite the visit, they would still fight the ruling coalition.
