KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will be attending a special meeting by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) next Wednesday to address the issue concerning the United States’ move to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Najib will be attending the meeting in Istanbul, Turkey and represent not only the voices of Malaysians but also Umno in objecting the move.
Zahid announced this in his winding up speech at the Umno annual general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here today.
“We will continue to speak up on behalf of our brothers in Palestine. Our prime minister will be attending a special OIC meeting to voice our undivided support for them," he said to a huge roar from the party's delegates.
Zahid, who is Umno vice-president carrying out the duty of the deputy president, also commended Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, other political parties and non-governmental organisations in holding a peaceful protest outside the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur yesterday to protest the move.
Jerusalem is regarded as the third holiest site for Muslims.
“Our president will carry the voice of our party and country which has been consistent in upholding the rights of the Palestinians, similar to our consistent stand in speaking up against the atrocities against the Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar," he said.
