KUALA LUMPUR: Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak today shifted the party into high gear by urging members to face the ‘father of all elections’ with three pieces of advice.
In his fiery winding-up speech at the end of the day Umno General Assembly, Najib rallied his troops by asking them to uphold unity, be loyal (to party) and to serve (the people) to ensure Barisan Nasional retains Putrajaya and wins the 14th General Election with a bigger mandate.
“There is only one duty for us (to win the election). Please guard these talismans forever because they will ensure the strength of the party. If you are united, loyal and willing to serve, Umno’s flag will continue to fly high,” Najib said, drawing loud cheers from the packed Merdeka Hall in Putra World Trade Centre, here.
In his one-hour speech amid a sea of blue-garbed delegates, he said Umno was not only ready for GE14 but also confident of winning the polls.
“We are ready (for the polls). The wind is behind us and momentum is on our side,” he said, adding that members must go to the ground and relay this message to voters.
He said the party already has the support from the civil and corporate sectors.
Najib said members must also move in unison as the party has resolved its leadership issue concerning the top three party posts - president, deputy president and senior vice-president.
Umno delegates on Friday had unanimously voted in favour of the ‘no-contest’ proposal for the party president and deputy president’s posts.
Party vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, meanwhile, urged party members to grant Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein a safe passage to retain his vice-presidency.
Najib, in his speech which received a standing ovation, also urged members to close ranks and resolve issues at the division level for everyone to work together to deliver the results.
“We must love our party and accept the leadership’s decision (on election candidates). We must move and fight together to win.
“The decision (on candidates) does not come from the heart, it comes from the party. We need to field truly winnable candidates who can deliver results.”
While beating the election war drums, Najib said Umno will fight “tooth and nail” to win GE14 and retain Putrajaya.
