KUALA LUMPUR: The three seats for the Umno vice-president’s post are open for contest in the next party election, says Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Najib said Umno would give full support to current vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to retain his post in the event of a contest.
“The vice-president posts are open but we hope Hishammuddin will secure the highest number of votes.
“We will give our full support to him,” he told a press conference after delivering an adjournment speech at the end of the Umno General Assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre, here today.
Yesterday, the assembly endorsed a resolution that there would be a no-contest rule for the posts of Umno president and deputy president.
The assembly also agreed that vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would fill the deputy president’s post in the next party assembly.
This leaves two empty slots in the vice-presidency, including the seat left vacant following the removal of Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal from the post some time back.
Najib said the assembly’s resolution on no-contest rule for top two party posts would also automatically invalidate any nomination of candidates to challenge the incumbents.
He said the highest decision-making body in the party was by the assembly.
