PADANG RENGAS: Naming Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the prime minister designate should Pakatan Harapan win the general election is a backward move, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
The Tourism and Culture Minister said the future will be bleak for the country should the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman be made the premier again.
"This will only give a message that there is no future for the country if Dr Mahathir is made the prime minister as suggested by the opposition should they win. There will be no future if a very old person (Dr Mahathir is 92) is chosen. What kind of transformation will he bring?
"Choose the government with future, and there is no other clear indication for this than Barisan Nasional (BN). Choose BN for peace, wellbeing and prosperity. We are only inviting chaos if we choose the opposition," he said after attending a dialogue with community leaders in Kubang Panjang .
Apart from age factor, Nazri said Mahathir’s credibility was also arguable.
"Dr Mahathir does not have the trust of the people. In fact, he has received criticism from the people- the old, young, religious scholars and palace institutions. He has been hurling accusations to the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak since two years ago.
"But look at him (Dr Mahathir) now. While Najib is still the prime minister and people have the confidence for his leadership, Dr Mahathir is being criticised even by his own party members.
"That is his fate now, caused by his actions and accusations against Najib who was given the mandate by the people to lead the government administration," Nazri said.
