KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir admits in the High Court here that he harbours the desire to become a prime minister.
Mukhriz denied however that there was a secret pact to make him the Prime Minister, between his father Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who is PPBM chairman and DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, if the opposition coalition wins the 14th General Election.
In a witness statement in his defamation lawsuit against former DAP vice chairman Tunku Abdul Aziz Tunku Ibrahim, Mukhriz said everyone in the political arena has desires to become a leader, including becoming a Prime Minister.
“I do have the desure to become a leader but it has to be through a sincere and transparent waym not through deception, complot, evil or secret pacts as claimed by the defendant,” he said of allegations made by Tunku Abdul Aziz.
“But that desire must be borne of a pure heart because the responsibility to be shouldered would be of a big national trust,” said Mukhriz who is also Ayer Hitam assemblyman in Kedah.
Mukhriz said it is not a crime for any politician serving the people to have such a desire as long as it was done legitimately in the interest of the public.
He contended the claim made by Tunku Abdul Aziz that he had a “secret deal” or “secret pact” with his father and Kit Siang were slanderous.
“If I had such ambitions to become the Prime Minister, the intention and aspiration cannot be a basis or justification for the defendant to allege there was a ‘secret agreement’ or ‘secret pact’ or ‘secret alliance’ or ‘secret movement’ between Dr Mahathir and Kit Siang to make me the Prime Minister and kit Siang as the deputy Prime Minister.
“I have never announced to any news organisation that I purportedly have an ambition to become a Prime Minister,” he said.
Mukhriz also told in his statement that Pakatan Harapan at its second convention in Shah Alam on Jan 7 had named Dr Mahathir as the Prime Minister designate while Datuk Seri dr Wan Azizan Wan Ismail as the deputy Prime Minister, should the ruling coalition win the next election.
Earlier, his councel Mohamed Haniff Khatri Abdulla, informed the court that the witness statement was filed through the judiciary e-filing system before being subkitted to the courts and counsel Datuk Seri Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos who represents Tunku Abdul Aziz.
Mohamed Haniff said Dr Mahathir and Kit Siang will be called to give their statement in the trial.
Jaharbeden said he will need time to go through the witness statement before responsding to it. Trial before Judge Datuk Nordin Hassan will continue on Jan 18.
In the suit filed on Feb 7 last year, Mukhriz claimed that Tunku Abdul Aziz had made statements about an alleged pact to make Mukhriz the prime minister and Lim Kit Siang the deputy prime minister.
The former Kedah menteri besar said that on Dec 30 last year, Tunku Abdul Aziz made a statement containing defamatory words in the AIDCNews blog. The statement was published in various media, portals and blogs, and Mukhriz denied the allegation on Jan 1 to restore his reputation.
