KUALA LUMPUR: PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali is trying to “escape” from his Gombak parliamentary seat by offering it to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to contest in the 14th General Election (GE14).
Former Selangor MB Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib said the offer was nothing more than an excuse for Azmin to run away, as he might be feeling the heat and is not confident he can win the seat this time around.
Azmin had defended the Gombak seat since 2008.
“If he just runs away, the people will question him. So, he has to find a reason to do so and move to a new seat because the people (at a new area) wouldn’t know him and understand his working style.
“He is like a shaman. He only has the advantage outside (other areas), but not at his own place (Gombak) because the people there already know his attitude,” Muhammad said, as quoted by Berita Harian today.
Azmin, through his Twitter account yesterday, stated that he was ready to make way for Dr Mahathir to contest in Gombak if PKR agrees to it.
Muhammad added, Azmin’s proposal is considered “shallow” as Dr Mahathir does not need the Selangor MB’s advice on where to contest in GE14.
“(Dr Mahathir) has his own places to contest… either Langkawi or Kubang Pasu… his old seat. So, this issue of asking Dr Mahathir to contest in Gombak would not bring about any implications at all,” he said.
Asked if the Pakatan Harapan chairman will manage to sway Malay votes at Gombak since the seat is a Malay-majority area and has been Umno’s stronghold for decades, Muhammad said the people are now more intelligent compared to during Dr Mahathir’s premiership.
“The public notice how he (Dr Mahathir) led the country once with many crises happening at the time. However, then, there was no social media. So, everything was well wrapped up and no one talked about it.
“This was how he managed to stay as the prime minister for 22 years,” Muhammad added.
