KUALA LUMPUR: The Gombak Parliamentary seat is no longer secure for Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali to contest in the next general election – hence his offering it to PPBM chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
This is the view of Pas Research Centre director Dr Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki who said that the Selangor Menteri Besar would not be able to defend the seat in a three-cornered fight, with Pas having cut ties with PKR.
“I do not know what his intentions are by letting go of the seat, but, I can say that the seat no longer ‘belongs’ to PKR. This is based on research and analysis.
“(But) if Azmin is not safe, I am confident that Dr Mahathir cannot hold the seat (either), as a majority of voters in Gombak went through the ‘Reformasi’ movement during Dr Mahathir’s leadership,” he said after Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s speech at Kolej Universiti Islam Zulkifli Muhammad here on Sunday.
Zuhdi, who was asked to comment on Azmin’s decision to give way to Dr Mahathir to contest the Gombak Parliamentary seat, said the move is a step towards failure.
He added that Dr Mahathir stands a better chance at contesting in Langkawi instead.
