PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has become a successful nation because it is led by Malay and Muslim leaders, adopting the Malay cultural values.
Sepang Umno chief Datuk Marsum Paing said Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad should not fault the Malay community as one of the reasons that Malaysia will not become a developed country by 2020.
“I disagree that Malays are lazy, not hardworking and not trustworthy. Malaysia is developing because it was led by Malays and Umno.
“Dr Mahathir is setting his own benchmark that the Malays should be like his children.
“He is stressed. His words were influenced by anger and fuelled by vengeance. That is why his action contradicts with the Malay culture and manners,” he said when contacted by New Straits Times.
Marsum said the former prime minister is working hard to destroy and betray his own race, religion and country.
“Is this what he wants to portray? Is he a good Malay who can be a role model?
“He should just resign and rest. It is pity to see him being played by DAP,” he said.
Marsum was responding to Dr Mahathir’s comment that the Malays were less committed to work, not hardworking and at times, not trustworthy.
Dr Mahathir, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, said the community’s culture has become a major stumbling block in Malaysia’s journey to be a developed country by 2020.
Speaking at his Vision 2020 Forum here yesterday, the Dr Mahathir said: “I believe the Malays have the same capabilities as the Europeans and the Japanese. But, the (Malay) culture remains a problem.
“We find that we (Malays) are not so committed, not so hardworking and sometimes, we are not so trustworthy.”
