SHAH ALAM: Barisan Nasional has a good chance at winning in Selangor in the 14th General Election, due to Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) failure in resolving people-centric issues in the state.
Universiti Utara Malaysia political and international studies senior lecturer Md Shukri Shuib said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who is also PKR deputy president, had failed in his duty to serve the people.
Shukri noted that Selangor, despite being a rich state, had faced numerous unresolved issues concerning the public and basic necessities, including water, land and housing.
“Selangor has become one of the most problematic states under Azmin’s leadership. Azmin has to work harder to regain the people’s trust and confidence or it is best for him to resign before GE14 if Pakatan Harapan wants to stay in power in Selangor,” he said today.
“Azmin is now one of the major burdens of the opposition pact. It is time for Pakatan Harapan to elect an alternative menteri besar.”
Shukri said PH was no longer the strong opposition pact it was in GE13 and was merely depending on “political celebrities” like Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to rake in the votes. It is not genuine in serving the people. They are more targeted towards bringing down Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the BN coalition.
“There is lack of confidence (in top leadership), differences in opinions and dissatisfaction among component parties. Pakatan Harapan is an alternative, but not a favourite alternative to BN.
“Pas withdrew its support from the opposition coalition because its members saw many issues surrounding Azmin and the party. With the involvement of Dr Mahathir and his followers, the new opposition pact saw a change in direction.”
On PH’s plan to take over Putrajaya, Shukri said: ““t would be a nightmare to see Pakatan Harapan leading the government.
“The party has failed to run a state successfully. Imagine if they were to run the country.”
“Will they really work to serve the people? Or will all states end up like Selangor?”
On Pas’ position in GE14, he said Pas would be able to capture many sympathy votes in Selangor and their contribution towards any party was crucial.
Political analyst Professor Dr Azizuddin Mohd Sani said Selangor BN should show that it had better policies than the Pakatan government.
He said component parties such as MCA, MIC and Gerakan should work harder to attract non-Malay voters to BN.
“BN is relying too much on Malay voters. Selangor BN requires rebranding as a party for the people with new leaders replacing the old guard.
“There shouldn’t be any parachute candidates. Candidates must be from the constituencies they are running to represent. They must also be likeable and friendly,” he added.
