KUALA LUMPUR: S. Kisona presented the best Mother’s Day gift for her mother when she clinched her maiden international title at the Victor International Series on Sunday.

The 19-year-old women’s singles player, who is hoping to make an impact in the national senior squad, clawed back from a game down to upset third seed Gregoria Mariska Tunjung of Indonesia 10-21, 21-16, 21-19 at the Sudirman Badminton Hall in Surabaya.

Earlier in March, Kisona bagged the National Championships Under-21 Championships in Penang when she downed national teammate M. Thinaah in the final.

“I am extremely happy because finally I have an international title to show for,” said Kisona, who settled for the bronze medal in the 2013 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.

“What makes my victory today sweeter is that I get to dedicate this to my mother since it’s Mother’s Day.

“It is also an early gift for my parents (A. Selvaduray and S. Valarmathi) as they will celebrate their wedding anniversary on Thursday,” added Kisona, who is the youngest of four siblings.

On whether she intends to feature at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games in August, Kisona said: “I can’t really say because it will depend on the management (BA of Malaysia). There are still players who are better than me like Soniia Cheah Su Ya, Ho Yen Mei and Goh Jin Wei.”

Meanwhile in the women’s doubles, Soong Fie Cho-Tee Jing Yi won their first title as a pair after seeing off second seeds Dian Fitriani-Nadya Melati of Indonesia 21-16, 16-21, 21-19.

The tournament is only the Malaysian pair’s second, after reaching the quarter-finals of the Thailand International Challenge last week.
