KUALA LUMPUR: About RM685,000 was raised in the HELP Charity Golf Tournament 2017 at Glenmarie Golf and Country Club today.

More than 80 people, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak participated in the golf tournament.

Najib was the first player to tee off in the game that started at 8am and ended at 12.30pm.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof also played in the tournament.

Programme chairman Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin said the funds were meant to assist 20,000 Form Five students across the country who will be sitting for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations later this year.

HELP, he said, is an initiative by Umno Youth Urban and Housing Affairs bureau which started back in 2014.

"We are targetting to assist 20,000 students in 191 parliamentary constituencies by giving them tuition from July onwards. Our effort is also to ease the financial burden of underprivileged families that find it hard to provide the best education to their children.

"The funds received today has boosted the collection to RM2.7 million. Golfing is one way for us to raise more funds and we hope to reach RM4 million by July so that we can provide tuition to more students.

"Through the tuition, we want them obtain credits in five subjects such as Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mathematics so that it will be easier for them to further their studies." said Nazir Hussin.
