KUALA LUMPUR: Following news of Adriano Moraes’ withdrawal due to injury, One Championship’s Vision of Victory is now set to feature Malaysia’s own Gianni Subba as the main MMA event.
With less than two weeks before the event on March 9 at Axiata Arena, Gianni is to face Australian Reece McLaren in the flyweight division.
This means Moraes is out of his title defence but it will also open doors for 25-year-old Gianni to prove his worth in his hopes winning his own title.
“Fighting in the main event in KL has been a goal of mine ever since I signed with One in 2012. This fight is for the number one contender spot and I plan on showing everyone that I am ready to be next in line for the title.
“I am super excited and I know it’s going to be a scrappy contest but I have a really good team of coaches in Bali. It’s a change but I’m ready for this change and I’m confident in my skill set,” said Gianni, who holds a 9-2 career record while McLaren will enter the cage with a 10-5.
Gianni’s last fight was in August in Kuala Lumpur at One’s Quest for Greatness where he defeated former world title challenger Riku Shibuya by way of unanimous decision after three rounds.
If Gianni wins, he will be up for a title match which would make him the third Malaysian to do so after Ev Ting in Manila against Philippine’s Eduard Folayang (loss via unanimous decision) and Agilan Thani’s Singapore scrap against former Olympian Ben Askren (loss via submission arm-choke).
Agilan, 22, will share the One cage with Gianni as he is set to meet India’s Amitesh Chaubey in the welterweight battle on the main card.
The other Malaysians on the fight card’s preliminaries include Muhammad Aiman, and Jihin Radzuan, who will be making her One debut.
