KUALA LUMPUR: Sepang International Circuit (SIC) have confirmed that Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah will be joining Monster Yamaha Tech 3 as a full season rider in MotoGP this year.
SIC chief executive officer Datuk Razlan Razali, who has played a pivotal role in negotiating the move, confirmed that the country’s dream of seeing a Malaysian competing in the premier class has become a reality.
Tech 3 team principal Herve Poncharal, however, has yet to confirm this.
"As far as I, Herve, Dorna and Yamaha are concerned (Hafizh's inclusion in MotoGP) is 100 per cent confirmed," said Razlan today.
He met with Poncharal and Dorna management to discuss Hafizh's future in MotoGP for the 2019 and 2020 seasons during the recent pre-season test at Sepang.
Razlan disclosed that during the meeting, Poncharal agreed to offer a spot in MotoGP with Dorna chief executive officer Carmelo Ezpleta and Yamaha giving their full support to Hafizh replacing Jonas Folger in the Tech 3 team.
"There were three names being considered, including Hafizh. Yamaha Japan chose Hafizh and they had also discussed the matter with Yamaha Hong Leong (Malaysia), Yamaha Thailand and Yamaha Indonesia. They agreed on Hafizh."
Razlan added that he will be heading for the third pre-season test at Buriram on Feb 16-18 to follow up on Hafizh's contract with the team.
However, Poncharal, in a report on the official MotoGP website today, announced that Hafizh would ride for Tech 3 in Buriram where his performance will be evaluated before a decision on his inclusion in the team will be made.
