KUALA LUMPUR: Following their impressive eight gold medal haul at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games (KL2017) in August, the Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) has proposed 17 names for the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia next year.

However, the final decision still lies in the hands of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).

National chief coach Zainal Abas said, among the 17 are the eight gold medal winners along with several other potentials who are expected to shine at the Games.

“The selection committee has listed the names but it will still be up to the OCM to confirm the final list.

“For now, the athletes are training as usual while MAF awaits the budget, which will be used for their new training programme,” said Zainal.

The Malaysian contingent's eight gold medals in athletics at KL2017 erased their previous mark of three gold, achieved at the Singapore Games two years ago.

Apart from Khairul Hafiz Jantan winning the men's 100m race, the Malaysian athletes also set five national records and three Games record through Jackie Wong, Grace Wong - both through shot put - and Hakimi Ismail in the triple jump event.

At the previous Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Malaysia failed to return with any medals from athletics.
